Location and General Information
The Cayman Islands consists of a group of three Island in the Caribbean. The main Island Grand Cayman is situated approximately 450 miles south of Florida. The three Islands have a total area of 102 square miles with Grand Cayman having an area of 75 square miles. The Cayman Island has a tropical Climate providing
mild dry winters with temperatures between 65 F and 75f and warm summers
with temperatures between 75 F and 85 F. Rainfall is light between the
months of November to April which is the winter season.
Communiatons There are excellent telephone, fax and telex facilities with direct dialing to and from the rest of the world. The Islands are served by Cayman Airways, Pan Am, Northwest Airlines and American Airlines. Miami is one hour away by air and the Island also has direct air links with New York, Atlantic, Tampa, Houston and Jamaica. The Islands are a popular cruise - ship stop. Population The population of the three Islands is approximately 26,000 the majority of which reside on Grand Cayman. Language The Official and spoken Language is English. Political Structure The Cayman Island are a British Colony and therefore
the United Kingdom Parliament at Westminister retains the right to legislate.
The Islands have a Government who is a appointed by the Queen who heads
the Cayman Islands Government and is responsible for the civil service,
defense, law and order and external affairs. There is a Legislative Assembly
consisting of 12 elected members plus the Financial Secretary, the Attorney
General and the Administrative Secretary which may make laws with the consent
of the Crown.
Legal System The Cayman Islands have their own courts of Law with the rights of appeal to the Cayman Court of Appeal and the Ultimately to the Privy Council in England. The Cayman Island Law is Based on English Common Law. Taxation The Cayman Islands are a pure tax haven with no direct
taxation being levied on residents or corporations. There are no capital
gains, inheritance or gift taxes although there is stamp duty on real property
of 7 . 5 per cent on transfer and 1 per cent on mortgages.
